What can you use the app for?

Tupalo.com is a social yellow pages where users can look for bars, restaurants, cafes and salons to visit or share their own favorites. It has all of the usual social networking aspects, plus a city-based directory of user-recommended places to visit. Users have a home page, where they can view their favorite places, friends and photos. Users are given a Karma rank based on the amount they participate in the site. The site can be searched by keyword or browsed by tag cloud of most popular tags or location. Searches return results in list form, showing the name and address of the establishment and its rating on the site. Clicking on a link in the list brings up a detail list which includes further details about the business and a map to its location.

Users can Add a Spot, which allows them to add a favorite place along with a review of it. In addition photos can be added to a spot. Fields which can be entered for a spot include Name, Address, Zip, Website, Phone Number, Category and tags. Users can also specify its location on a map of the city where the spot is located. In addition, the user can provide a review just after adding the spot. Users can easily invite their friends from the existing social networks, or they can find new friends on the site. The site is very useful for tourists, as it provides information furnished by locals about the best local places.

Vienna, Austria-based Tupalo.com was founded in 2007 as a privately funded Internet startup. The site is supported by the City of Vienna's Departure Fund.

What are the differences to other apps?

Competition to Tupalo.com comes from sites such as Yelp and TrustedPlaces. Tupalo.com contains results for spots worldwide, while Yelp is primarily used in the US and TrustedPlaces primarily in Europe. Neither site offers the number of international results provided by Tupalo. Yelp has more users, but this is likely to change as Tupalo continues to add new users from all over the world.
